Saturday afternoon baseball fans were treated to 2 games at Okkoko High School Triple J Baseball Field.
In the first game of the Guam PONY Baseball Softball Bronco Division twin bill, it was a battle of 2 of the best 12u teams on Guam. The Bonded Materials Tigers took on the Dodgers. The Dodgers came out early and often plating a run in each of the first 4 innings. It wasn’t until the 3rd inning, trailing by 3 runs that the Tigers were able to score a run off starting pitcher Nolan Cruz. By the end of the 3rd inning, the game was tied at 3 apiece, led by a towering deep fly ball that the wind kept in the ballpark for an RBI double. The remainder of the game was a back and forth affair with the Dodgers retaking the lead in the 4th. Going into the 6th inning and with time running out, the Tigers came back strong with 3 runs and lead 6-4. With just 2 minutes remaining in the game of the 2 hour time limit, the Dodgers came up to bat and tied the game, Dodgers Zavier Camacho and Javen Pangelinan scored to tie the game. In the bottom of the 7th, it was the Tigers chance to win the game with a walk off. But that was not to happen as the Dodgers defense went into action and held the Tigers to no runs. This was a very competitive game by some outstanding players that unfortunately had to end in a tie 6-6 because of the no extra innings rule. The Tiger are now 1-0-1 and the Dodgers are 0-0-1 after their first Bronco Division game.
The second game of the day was the 76 Cougars visiting the Yigo Mayor's Thunder. The Cougars got on the board in the 1st inning scoring 1 run. But the Thunder showed they had what it takes to hit the ball and score runs, putting 5 on the board. In the second inning, the Cougars roared back with 9 runs of their own, while in the bottom half of the inning the Thunder added 2 more runs. That was all the Thunder would score. Leading 12-7 Cougars Rocki Jae Mesa, the only girl on the team, came up to bat with 1 out and crushed the ball to the deepest part of the ball park. With the wind blowing strongly in at Triple J Field, it stayed in the yard, bouncing right at the 250ft fence line, she was held up at 3rd base after racing around the bases for a triple. Mesa eventually scored on a single 2 batters later. Cougars win in 5 innings 17-7 due to the 'mercy rule'. Cougars begin the season with a win and are 1-0 as the Thunder drop to 0-2.
